It's Only News If You're Famous

Today, America lost a man who makes more money in one year than I will make in the entire rest of my life.

His job? To throw a ball.

Literally, the man made $3,300,000 this year as a ball thrower.

He will be missed, and the balls left unthrown will, in their stillness and proximity to the ground, leave a gaping hole in the psyches of all Americans, but especially New Yorkers. And Philadelphians. You know, 'cause he was on the Phillies for, like, two years. And Cincinnatians, they'll feel it too over at Great American Ball Park. (Yes, that really is the name of the field where the Reds play.)

Torontoans, they'll feel it too, and the Blue Jays might even have a moment of silence during their next game.

Cory Lidle can never be replaced.

Except by the next $3 million dollar ball thrower.

Let's have a moment of silence for the other 6,500 or so Americans who died today.

Q: If the median expected salary for a janitor in the United States is $23,777, is one year of Cory Lidle's life really worth 138 years of Joe Janitor's life?

Don't worry Steve, with inflation we'll all be googleaires by the time we're bald (except Sam and possibly Michelle.)

Of course that will still be poor.

I'm appalled that I only make a little more than twice what a janitor makes. I went to liberal arts school, damnit~

It's an attitude like this that furthers the trivialization of loss of life. He had a wife and a kid. And the officials weren't allowed to release the name of the instructor because the family hadn't been informed.

Thanks for making the world that much more shitty.

Do you mean I won't be a googleaire, or that I won't be bald?

Sam said:

I, on the otherhand, make about half what the average janitor makes. So in conclusion it goes: Ballthrower, Janitor, Musician on the totem poll

Sam, it's good to be the caboose.

If I had a point in writing this entry (which I'm not convinced of), it's the trivialization of loss of life. But not his - everyone elses. There are far more catastrophic and terrible things going on causing far larger numbers of people to die (Iraq and Darfur are the two that come to mind fastest, but are by no means the only examples) and I got the feeling yesterday that the value Cory Lidle's life was appraised at by news attention was disproportionate to his actual value as compared with just about any other human life. When I did some research about him, this was thrown into sharper contrast by his salary and how it compared to the salaries of other Americans. I mean, okay, sure, I think people should earn more or less based on what they do and how good they are at it - but to say that a a jantior would have to work for 138 years to be worth one year of Cory Lidle's life is absurd. Like, hello, we have a minimum wage. How about a maximum?

Anyway. In getting all literal and explaining myself, I have surely dulled any of the bite the original post may have held. But, in short, Anonymous, I think you're way off the mark. Even without my explanation - I mean, did you see the title?
