AngloMania at the Met, not to be missed

| | Comments (0)

This Saturday, Dylan and I took an evening trip to The Met to enjoy some live chamber music (4-8:30 Fridays and Saturdays, where you also sit and eat fancy appetizers and fancy drinks (including an absinthe/grenadine thingy...absinthe isn't illegal anymore? Was it ever? We will be going back soon for the absinthe and will let you know how things turn out)), and some British Fashion over the in special exhibitions section, called AngloMania:Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion.

The program should have been something more like this:

Maybe you're thinking, fashion? I don't care about fashion. But you should when it's as awesome as this. It's sort of 17th century tradition inspired craziness with a little punk thrown in for good measure. Enjoy such gems as a metal corset that wraps around like ribs and has a bent spine and tail jutting violently from the back, starched wigs coming to a point in front of the eyes, a hunting room with lifesized mannequin horses, mowhawks made out of barbie legs, tampons, broken records, Doc Martin boot soles, and cigarettes, and a creepy ass bird mask with a metal beak in an exquistely decorated scene (and the sounds of crows cawing). Each room has been dressed so beautifully and creatively, and everywhere you turn there is some fascinating detail to notice.

I was thinking about this exhibit the next morning when I woke up. It was a really inspiring, if not for the fashion and sets, for the creativity alone. It's running until September 4th, so check it out soon if you can. There's also a nice (although small) Schiele and Klimt exhibit on loan from some rich guy's private collection, and a Kara Walker exhibit worth seeing (more for the other artists that Walker's, who's paintings were a little weak compared to the great work hung next to hers).

They just raised the suggested donation for admission from $15 to $20, so now you have even more to be ashamed of when you hand over your crumpled $1 bill, but it's worth it to see this exhibit. You heard it here first.
