Frog eyes...my surprising love.

....so after me and Michelle saw Beruit and Sunset Rubdown, we had planned to leave, having listened to a song off of Frog Eyes myspace page and not having been all that wowed. But we decided we should stay for at least a song, especially since about half the crowd cleared out when Sunset Rubdown was finished (if only those Wolf Paradeaphiles had known that Spencer Krug was playing keyboards for Frog Eyes the little sycophants would have stayed.) So we stayed and wow.....

I have not seen a front man rock and be as mesmerizing since a "Kiss Off" show. Carey Mercer the front is a standing, barking, yelping reminder that what it takes to be a rockstar isn't a good suit and a good haircut, but a trapped beast that can only escape through your mouth into a microphone. The set itself started out really strong, but gets a little monotonous in the middle, but Mercer stays right in it. I was tired, I wanted to go home, the music was just okay at times, but I could not stop watching that guy rock, and jerk and spray spit all over the place. It was great. As it turns out Mercer, who is married to his totally rocking drummer, is a pretty smart guy, and if you could understand the lyrics he was growling, you would probably learn a little something about "The Odyssey", and other literary classics. In a way I find it very surprising that they don't seem to have a larger indie following (in America at least, they might in hometown Canada) considering that they released 3 well rated albums in 2004 and that, one album "The Golden River" got a 9.1 on pitchfork. Regardless, they certainly won me over last night, and I would jump at the chance to see them again.
Here is their myspace page. I recommend The Akhian Press to get the best sense of what kind of stuff they played last night.

Here is a Pitchfork review of "The Golden River"
http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/f/frog-eyes/the-golden-river.shtm
...and her is one for "The Folded Palm" which is more like what he sounded like last night.
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/f/frog-eyes/folded-palm.shtml
and finally a interview with front-man Carey Mercer, who honestly seems like a guy you want to go get a beer with.
Comments
You forgot to mention that he was probably on something. He was shaking and tripping on cords like he was on something. Every good front man is on something (except that guy from the Kiss-Off..the music is his drug, man. He's so hardcore).
