The Quest for the Best in SNES

| | Comments (7)

I love my Super Nintendo. I love it so so much. When I was 10, and my best friend had one, there was nothing I wanted more. And then, after coveting this perfect console for many a year, I finally got one. In my humble opinion, SNES is the best of the video gaming. With more vintage gaming, I mean, sure, it's really fun. But for me there's not enough longevity there. And with newer gaming, there's just too many buttons, too many levels, and too many dimensions. I'd just prefer 2D myself.
Anyway, I'm not getting into this discussion right now (but you can bet I will on a post in the near future). What I wanted to talk about today is my quest for the best games for SNES, and I need your help.

I already have Super Mario Allstars, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island (a personal favorite) Tetris Attack, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, and NBA Jams (the only sports game I've ever been fond of). I also have a shit ton of sports games and a piece of crap called Zoop! that were given to me. But I am nowhere near where I need to be with this measley collection. I took a trip to a little something I like to call eBay today, and placed bids on a few of my old favorites, Zelda, Mortal Kombat 2, and Street Fighter 2 (the seconds are always better than the firsts when it comes to fighting games).
I almost bid on a compete Mario Paint set, but then got nervous, because that seems like a game that was really cool as a kid, and isn't cool now. I don't know, has anyone played it recently?
I've heard good things about Super Metroid, but have never played it. Same with Final Fantasy (or FF1, as fans apparently call it). And what is this Secret of Mana the kids are talking about? It's completely foreign to me.
If anyone has any suggestions or information that could lead to a better Super Nintendo Empire, your help will be greatly appreciated, and rewarded with invites over to my apartment, where we will commence to game it up all night long. There will be many assortments of chips.

I love Mario Paint still. I animate using it all the time (and post them to my blog, http://www.mariopaint.blogspot.com) It's a bit frustrating compared to modern animation programs, but sometimes restrictions inspire creativity. I'd definitely reccommend getting some Mario Paint!

I still hunger for a Tetris Attack deathmatch. I keep telling Dylan to make you come over with it when I visit, but you never come over when I visit!

Anyway, FF1 isn't available for the SNES, but fear not - Final Fantasy III (FFVI in Japan) is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the best console RPGs ever released. Okay, the best.

I could go in to detail about what makes it better than every other console RPG ever, but I'm very sick right now. So I won't.

Find a copy of it and then find yourself in heaven!

Okay Stephen, this better be good, I just spent $30 on FF3. Picked a prety rare game there. But I trust your gaming knowledge more than most, namely based on your affection for TA. We will have our deathmatch soon, and you will cry mightly.

Super Metroid has a strong following for being one of the best SNES games there is. RPG peeps will bicker other Final Fantasies and Chrono Trigger. Mario Paint is still amazing. Purest still say that Zelda: Link to the Past is the best Zelda, trumping the 3D ones. I say that's bullshit, but its still an amazing game. Star Fox is still visually stunning, if simple.

be careful if you get mario paint, you HAVE to have the mouse for it to work. i bought it on ebay, thinking for some reason it would work with a regular controller. it won't.

One of my favorite SNES games is Actraiser. I can play it over and over and over.

Basically, you're God, and you go through each territory of this world, ridding it of evil demons. Once the section is clear, the people of that territory are free to build their little colonies. They start out buliding adobe huts and work their way all the way up to, like, Southern style mansions. It's awesome.

You made the right choice, Michelle. It's not really rare - they printed a million of 'em when it first came out, it was a huge deal... They're rare because the people that have them now won't let go of them.

Congratulations!

Mr. Mann is right, Actraiser is amazing. It is probably my favorite SNES game. Mario Kart is classic, as are the Contra games.
